MARTIN DAGENAIS SERA LE NOUVEL ENTRAÎNEUR-CHEF DES HUSKIES/MARTIN DAGENAIS NAMED HEAD COACH OF HUSKIES
Les Huskies de Rouyn-Noranda de la Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) sont fiers d’annoncer l’embauche de Martin Dagenais à titre d’entraîneur-chef.
Originaire de Marionville en Ontario, Dagenais a été à la tête des P’tits Sénateurs d’Ottawa dans la Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) pendant sept saisons avant de faire le saut come entraîneur-adjoint avec les 67’s d’Ottawa de la Ligue de hockey de l’Ontario (LHO) avant le début de la saison 2021-22.
« Je désire remercier l’organisation des Huskies, plus précisément Jacques Blais et Yannick Gaucher, pour ce geste de confiance. Dès mes premières conversations avec les dirigeants de l’équipe, je savais que c’était ici que je voulais être. J’ai très hâte de débuter ce nouveau chapitre de ma carrière. »
Avec les P’tits Sénateurs, Dagenais a connu un succès immédiat, guidant l’équipe à la finale du circuit à sa deuxième saison comme entraîneur-chef et gérant. Après avoir remporté deux championnats consécutifs, en plus d’avoir participé à quatre finales en autant de saisons, Dagenais a été engagé en tant qu’entraîneur-adjoint par les 67’s d’Ottawa de la LHO.
Chez les 67’s, Dagenais était le responsable du groupe de défenseurs ainsi que de l’infériorité numérique. La formation ottavienne a fracassé un record de franchise lors de la dernière saison, affichant une fiche de 51-12-5 avec 10 joueurs de 16 ou 17 ans dans leur alignement. Ils ont accordé un maigre total de 171 buts en 68 parties, bon pour le premier rang dans la LHO. Leur jeu en infériorité numérique a été tout aussi impressionnant alors qu’ils ont pris le deuxième rang du circuit ontarien en saison régulière et le premier en séries éliminatoires.
« Je crois sincèrement que les deux années passées avec les 67’s ont fait de moi un meilleur entraîneur. J’ai eu l’occasion de travailler avec James Boyd, Dave Cameron et Norm Milley et j’ai appris énormément. Je me sens donc d’attaque pour ce nouveau défi qui s’offre à moi avec les Huskies. »
Dagenais a aussi passé une demi-saison avec les Olympiques de Gatineau de la LHJMQ en 2019-20. Il s’est joint à l’équipe d’entraîneurs d’Éric Landry après le congé des fêtes mais la saison a pris fin de façon abrupte lorsque le virus de la Covid-19 est apparu.
Sur la scène internationale, Dagenais a représenté l’équipe de l’Est du Canada à trois occasions lors du Défi mondial junior A, remportant deux médailles d’argent. À sa dernière participation en 2019, il a agi comme entraîneur-chef de l’équipe canadienne qui a subi une défaite crève-cœur en finale, s’inclinant en deuxième période de prolongation face à la Russie.
Le franco-ontarien de 41 ans s’amènera à Rouyn-Noranda en compagnie de sa conjointe Geneviève et ses jeunes enfants Léa et Olivier.
The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League are proud to announce the hiring of Martin Dagenais as their new Head Coach.
Originally from Marionville, Ontario, Dagenais was the Head Coach and General Manager of the Ottawa Junior Senators of the Central Canada Hockey League for seven seasons before making the jump to the Ottawa 67’s as an Assistant Coach under Dave Cameron beginning in 2021-2022.
“I want to thank the Huskies organization, specifically Jacques Blais and Yanick Gaucher for their confidence in me. During my initial conversations with the club, I knew that this is where I wanted to be. I can’t wait to get started and begin a new chapter in my career.”
The Junior Senators achieved immediate success with Dagenais at the helm guiding the club to the Bogart Cup Finals in his second year as Head Coach and General Manager. The Junior Senators reached four consecutive CCHL Finals under Dagenais, winning two and advancing to the Centennial Cup, before taking a job as an Assistant Coach with the Ottawa 67s of the Ontario Hockey League.
With the 67’s, Dagenais was responsible for the coaching and development of the defencemen as well as the team’s penalty kill. This past season, the 67’s set a franchise record with 51 wins and 107 points, amazing considering the club had 10 players who were 16 or 17 years old. The team gave up only 171 goals in 68 games, good for first place in the OHL. The penalty kill also ranked near the top of the league, ranking second overall during the regular season and first during the OHL playoffs.
“I believe that the past two years with the 67’s have made me a better coach. I learned so much working with tremendous people like James Boyd, Dave Cameron and Norm Milley and it has prepared me for the challenge offered to me by the Huskies.”
Dagenais also spent half a season with the Gatineau Olympiques in 2019-2020 working under Head Coach Eric Landry. He joined the staff following the Christmas Break and remained until the season that ended abruptly due to the Covid-19 Virus.
Dagenais has had success on the international stage as well, representing Team Canada East at the World Junior A Challenge on three occasions. As Head Coach, Dagenais lead the Canada East team to the silver medal in 2019, reaching the final before losing in double overtime to the Russians.
The 41-year-old Franco-Ontarian will relocate to Rouyn-Noranda with his partner Genevieve and their children Léa and Olivier.
